Chapter 11

Young bucks

After a break, which involved a nap, food, and a tickle from Zandra, we found ourselves on the right side of the law when Cythera invited us into the interview with Keanu Sweeny, the guy who’d been seen fighting over Briar with her boyfriend.

While we waited for Keanu to be brought into the interview room, I turned to Cythera. “I thought we were interviewing Briar’s boyfriend first?”

“That was the plan, but we couldn’t find Trent at the campsite. We asked around and then spotted Keanu, so we brought him in instead. He was next on the list, anyway.”

“You don’t think Trent has already left the area?” Zandra said.

“If he has, we’ll bring him back. But I doubt he’s left. He’ll know better than to sneak off while an investigation into his girlfriend’s murder takes place.”

“Perhaps he’s hiding for a reason,” I said.

Cythera didn’t look up from the paperwork she scanned. “If he is, we’ll find him. I have everything under control.”

“As always. We can rely on you,” I said.

She snorted as she scribbled notes on a piece of paper.

A moment later, Keanu was brought in and settled in a seat by Bertoli, who then left the room. He was in his early thirties. New age guy attractive, with messy dark hair, corded multi-colored bangles around one wrist, and he wore tight jeans that looked uncomfortable to sit down in.

Cythera made the introductions, got Keanu to state his name and details, and then began the interview.

“Could you tell me about your relationship with Briar Vixen?”

“There’s not much to tell. I barely knew her. I mean, we got to know each other at the festival, but that’s it.” He inspected his nails. “She was hot, flirty, and obviously interested in me, so we made out.”

“You had an intimate relationship with her?” Cythera asked.

“Not really. She was cute and tipsy, so I figured, why not have fun?” Keanu leaned forward in his seat. “I heard a vampire got charged with killing her. Do you know why I broke up with my vampire girlfriend?”

Cythera hesitated, looked at her notes, and frowned. “You had a vampire girlfriend?”

“Because she sucked the life out of me.” Keanu snorted a laugh. “Sorry, I joke under pressure.”

“Why do you feel under pressure?” I asked.

His laughter faded. “I... I don’t. I’ve got nothing to hide. I figured you’d brought me here to learn if I saw anything dodgy. You know, some crusty vamp dragging Briar to the woods to play hide the fangs.”

“That’s part of the reason,” Cythera said. “Did you see Briar with a vampire the night she died?”

Keanu shook his head. “It’s gotta be one, though, right? Everyone was talking about what happened to her. I went to the woods when everyone else was there, but it was too crowded, so I didn’t see her body. But I heard she got bit. Two holes in the side of her neck. Classic vamp attack. Case solved.”

“Apparently not, since we’re still questioning suspects,” Zandra said.

Keanu waved a hand in the air.
